STANDUP PADDLEBOARD YOGA
Flow State /flō stāt/
In positive psychology, flow, also known as the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.
Taking your yoga practice to a paddle board takes your yoga to a whole new level. Total immersion in nature heightens your awareness of your surroundings and deepens the serene, meditative quality of yoga. The constant gentle motion of the water demands that you access core and stabilizer muscles at every moment, maximizing the mental and physical benefits of the practice. It also reminds us to not take ourselves so seriously and enjoy falling in! Taking savasana being gently rocked by the waves, the sun warming your skin, is one of the best feelings there is. Come fall in love with SUP yoga with me!

Fall in love with SUP yoga!
“I took my first SUP yoga class ever with Angie Sommerfeld. She gave very clear and easy instruction before we even got in the water. I found that with her instruction, I picked it up pretty quickly. On the water, her yoga class was an otherworldly experience. I highly recommend her SUP yoga classes!”
“Thank you so much, Angie! It was truly the most relaxing yoga class I have ever done! You were a great coach on the water and I really hope that we can set up some more classes before the end of the season.”
“Thanks for an amazing afternoon!”
“Thank you! It was really fun!”
“Angie’s SUP yoga class is full of peace and serenity in a beautiful setting. Angie’s great directions make you feel secure and successful, making you want to return again and again.”
“Seriously I can’t wait to join you again this summer. Please keep me on your email list.”
“The air was chilly, but nobody cared. We navigated the light chop on Round Pond to a cove where we could anchor our boards on flat water and flow through our asanas—even headstand. Yoga on the water—a magical first for our hardy little band of paddle-boarders.”
“Love sup yoga with Angie! It’s a great workout in an amazing, tranquil setting. The first time I did it I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of difficulty but you can make it as easy or as challenging as you want. This is definitely a fun opportunity for beginners as well as those who are more advanced. Angie is a great instructor, always offering modifications to those who need it and always challenging me, taking my practice to the next level.”
“SUP Yoga with Angie is an amazing experience! Taking your practice to the board and feeling the movement of the water with the instruction Angie gives is top notch.”
“Angie is a gifted yoga teacher inside and outside. Yoga outdoors is a special treat. Add the elements of sunshine, being on the water and doing meditation in motion and it’s a triumph!”
SUP Yoga FAQ
Q: Will I fall in?
A: Not if you don’t want to! The boards are humongous and incredibly stable. You can stay on your knees or seated for the entire class and you never have to stand up if you don’t want to. I modify the poses so we stay really low to the board. Most of the people that I’ve taken out in the past four seasons (I can’t believe this will be our fifth!) have never been on a paddleboard and many of them are new to yoga as well. Everybody comes away from the experience telling me how much fun they had! That being said, jumping in the water on a hot day is really fun and you are welcome to do that whenever you like ☺️
Q: Do I need to be advanced at yoga?
A: Not at all! I tailor the class to whoever comes and I always offer multiple options to choose from.
Q: How do we not float away?
A: Anchors!
Q: Will I be cold this early in the season?
A: It’s actually usually warmer on the water!
Q: What about bugs?
A: We have never been bitten by a single mosquito! Not sure why but they don’t come out that far into the middle of the pond.
Q: Is the water cold?
A: The pond is so small the water is delightfully warm! Feels like bath water!
Q: What should I wear?
A: Something you to feel comfortable doing happy baby pose in and jumping in the water and getting wet in. I usually wear yoga shorts and a yoga top. Swim shorts or running shorts and an athletic swim top would probably work well too. You will get wet at least up to your knees walking the board into the water from the beach so if you don’t want soggy pants you can roll up longer pants when we launch.
Q: Do you have to sign up for a series of classes or is it a drop in?
A: Drop in! We do appreciate it when you sign up and pay in advance but it’s fine to just show up too!
Q: How long is the class?
A: 90 min. This time includes a tutorial and explanation of the equipment on the beach before we launch, a brief paddle technique practice once we get on the water, paddling to our yoga spot, anchoring everyone so we don’t bump into each other but aren’t too far apart (this is so worth the time to get it right), yoga, yoga playtime where you can make requests for me to teach you something or experiment on your own, a lovely savasana gazing at the clouds and a relaxed paddle back to the beach.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: $40 includes all instruction and equipment rental (board, paddle, anchor, life vest, dry bag)
Q: Where is Round Pond?
A: Just off 293 a mile past the 9W/218/293 JCT, if you’re coming from the north, on your right. The address is 1348 Round Pond Road West Point, NY for your GPS. We meet at the beach.
Q: I’m not military, can I come?
A: Yes! This is open to the public!
Q: Can I book a private one on one or group session?
A: YES! As long as I’m not teaching elsewhere I’m happy to schedule a private session at any time! Email me at angie@blytheyoga.com to schedule it and then we will process it through Outdoor Rec once we have locked in the date and time.
Q: How’s the water quality?
A: West Point does a fantastic job keeping around Pond clean. I’ve never had a problem in 4 seasons.
Q: Critters?
A: I’ve seen one snake in my time teaching there but mostly it’s just really lovely ones like a blue heron flying overhead, dragonflies, birds singing to us from the trees and fish jumping in the distance. It’s pretty great.
Q: This sounds amazing! How do I sign up?
A: It IS amazing! Sign up by following this link https://bit.ly/2WevGXJ or calling Outdoor Rec at 845-938-0123 or Round Pond at 845-938-2503
